This is one of the happiest times of your life and if you are prepared and responsible, you can foster a loving and trusting bond with your dog when the baby arrives.

Planning Ahead is Key!

  • Get your dog used to any adjustments that you can anticipate now.
  • Establish the new schedule ahead of baby's arrival.
  • Establish a routine.
  • Reinforce structure before the baby arrives - do your leadership exercises with him.
  • Reacquaint your dog with his crate.
  • Refresh your commands. This will be almost impossible to do once the baby arrives.
  • Give your dog more exercise - a tired dog is a more tolerant dog!
  • Play the sounds of a baby crying so your dog gets used to this.
  • Reassure your dog he is not being replaced.
  • How to make the first introduction to your new baby safe and positive.
  • If you are going to use a stroller, get your dog used to it ahead of time.
  • Warning signs of when to seek the help of a canine behaviorist.
